KIRO MAVROV
Born in 1949.
Kiro Mavrov works actively in the fields of book, newspaper, magazine, and cartoon illustrations, as well as graphic arts and painting. He paints mainly with watercolors and oil on canvas.
In his own words, his signature painting style can be defined as tender expressionism.
His potent imagery is presented as a layered composition of accumulated symbols that urges interpretation on the part of the viewer. Mavrov's visual lexicon of materials and structure is riveting. The artist relies on fractured space, superimposed line-drawing, and unexpected allegories, and pictorial illusions to lure us into his world.
Mavrov has illustrated over 60 books, among which are "The Brothers Grimm", "Parkinson's Law", "Peter Pan", Astrid Lindgren's "Ronia, the Robber's Daughter".
His works are on display in public collections at the Museum of Cartoon in Basel, Switzerland and the House of Humor in Gabrovo, Bulgaria.
Kiro Mavrov has been awarded various national and international prizes, including
1st Prize at the International Exhibition of Sports Humor Art in Ancona, Italy (1989).
