TCHAVDAR GUZELEV

Born in 1961.
Tchavdar Guzelev is a graduate of the Bulgarian National Academy of Fine Arts. In 1987 he relocated from Bulgaria to Italy where he built a successful career as a graphic designer and illustrator for several publishing houses and magazines, amongst which are Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Max. Tchavdar also established himself as a stage designer at the Teatro Regio in Parma.
In 1993 he moved back to his homeland where he continued to work for numerous theatre, television, film, and ad productions. Guzelev went on to design for theatre abroad; in 2003 he was the stage designer for "Sirano" (E. Rostand) and "Klein Zaches Genannt Zinnober" (E. T. A. Hoffmann) at Thalia Theatre in Hamburg, Germany.

Tchavdar's figurative paintings are fresh and contemporary, striking with a very tactile surface. The artist's take on his subject matter is sensibly exhaustive, combining abstraction and strong graphics. Tchavdar creates powerful watercolor and pastel on paper pieces, characterized with subtle tonalities. The artist's favorite medium of expression is tempera on canvas.
